There are few large cities as beautiful as Ann Arbor, Michigan.  With a population over 110 000 this city is one of the largest in Michigan.  It is also home to the famous University of Michigan.  In the latest census, the Ann Arbor population included a 36 000 people that were either university or college students.  That is a hefty 32% of it's population.

Driving in Ann Arbor carries the same dangers as any large city, these dangers may be slightly worse with such a large percentage of college students. On the other hand, the large college community, does mean Ann Arbor is covered well by public transportation, so the dangers of younger drivers, are partly offset by the solid public transportation.

Lucky people always question the value of auto insurance - since they haven't had to use it - why is it important?  Well try telling that to one of the many Ann Arbor (and surrounding area) residents involved in a serious accident.  They know exactly why people need insurance.  Before you say "That won't happen to me, I am a great driver", take a look at the following statistics:

Ann Arbor and surrounding area Accident Statistics (Washtenaw County):

All Crashes: 10 787
Fatal crashes: 29
Fatal Crashes: 29
Crashes Producing Injury: 2,214
Crashes Producing Property Damage: 8,544
Interstate Crashes: 1,643
US Route Crashes: 1,607
State Route Crashes: 926
Local Street Crashes: 6,611
Persons Killed: 29
Persons Injured: 2,947

I wonder how many people of the 3000 injured thought the same?  I wonder what percentage of the 10 000 accidents were caused by people who thought that?  The fact is no matter how good a driver you are, you are susceptible to danger just like everyone else.  It isn't just yourself that you have to look out for, it is the circumstances and vehicles you aren't controlling that lead to the necessity for auto insurance.

Ann Arbor isn't unique, accidents happen everywhere but when you are driving in the city it is up to you to be prepared.  You should know where accidents are most likely to happen and be prepared to be extra careful at all times.  To start - these 10 intersections in Ann Arbor are the most dangerous in the city according to the Southeast Michigan:

Huron Pkwy S @ Washtenaw Ave
Packard St @ Stadium Blvd E
Main St S @ Stadium Blvd E
Jackson Ave @ Maple Rd N
Pittsfield Blvd @ Washtenaw Ave
Packard St @ Platt Rd
Fuller Rd @ Maiden Ln
Hilton Blvd @ Victors Way
Huron St E @ Main St N
Ellsworth Rd E @ Platt Rd

Anytime you are at an intersection you need to be fully focused and that goes double for the above intersections.

You know how to drive, and you know where danger lurks.  The next logical step is to protect yourself financially.  Hence the need for insurance.  Auto insurance will protect you from acts of God, circumstances out of your control and in a worst case scenario your own actions.

Do your research and make sure you get a number of different quotes when you shop for auto insurance in Ann Arbor.  If you are 100% committed to safe driving and properly insuring your vehicle - you will be well one your way to safe and responsible driving.
